Transition Like a Tortoise.
Imagine transitioning between your Yin Yoga poses as if you were a tortoise moving slowly through the vast desert. This easeful and steady transition principle is key to safely working with your body as you exit each pose.
After the gentle stimulation of Yin Yoga, our soft tissues are in a more delicate state. The stresses from the poses make our Yin tissues temporarily more liquid-like and fragile, so quick movements could lead to injury.
By moving slowly and carefully, we help preserve the benefits of a whole self-practice.
When a pebble is dropped into a calm, still lake, the water is instantly disturbed and can take moments to hours to settle again.
Our energy and attention work much the same way.
To support your transition, don’t hesitate to use your props. They can help you move safely and comfortably.
You might also try using your breath as a guide. Inhale as you prepare to move, then let your slow and steady exhale guide you on a seamless and mindful journey out of the pose.
There’s no need to get ahead of yourself or the moment.
As you transition, notice how your body feels. If something feels strained in any way, consider this a request from your body to rest and perhaps adopt a gentler approach as you continue your practice.
Remembering to transition like a tortoise helps us avoid harming our tissues and ensures we reap the deep, essential benefits of Yin Yoga. 🐢🧘♀️
