Vagus nerve meditation for relaxation

The ability to connect with the clarity and resilience within us is so important. Our practice is a steady companion to help us access the internal resources we need to bring compassionate energy and action into any circumstance. The breath is one empowering and reliable tool to support our natural ability to stay connected to the present moment, whatever it holds.

I’d like to share with you a breathing practice that I’m finding particularly valuable right now. In this brief exercise, we use the breath to activate the vagus nerve, that primary parasympathetic expressway running from the neck down through the torso and diaphragm and into all of our major organs. When activated, it signals the brain to steady so we can see, think, and act with greater clarity and intention.

For more guided techniques like this one, I invite you to check out my new book Yin Yoga & Meditation: A Mandala Map for Practice, Teaching, and Beyond. Within it, you’ll find a wide variety of ready-to-use meditative methods for the mat and throughout your day to support your peace and wellbeing.
