"Some people have a mistaken idea that all thoughts disappear through meditation, and we enter a state of blankness." - Sharon Salzberg
So ... since we all have brains, and brains exist in part to think, and it wouldn't really work out if our brains just suddenly went on strike, it would naturally follow then that we pretty much always have thoughts running through our heads, right?
It seems straightforward when you put it on paper like that, but have you ever caught yourself feeling like you're doing something wrong if your mind won't stop thinking? Maybe you're lying awake in the night and your head is just whirling. We've all been there! Maybe you're in Yin Yoga class and it feels like everyone is peaceful and still...except you, who can't seem to get work or worries out of your mind. Or maybe you've tried to sit down and meditate, and you're shocked, really, at how incessantly those "pesky" thoughts keep coming and coming - I mean, doesn't your brain know you're trying to relax!?
It's Ok to Think!
Well, here's some good news you can use: it’s OK to think. Your brain is doing what it was designed to do, just as surely as a bird in the air flaps her wings to fly. In meditation, we have the opportunity to adjust our vantage point, our perspective. We can stop fighting against the current and practice moving into a place of observation, simply noting what is happening - without judgment, without fear. Be kind and curious - what is happening up there between your ears?
